There is no real centre to the region, however mission beach itself has shops, restaurants, newsagency, bus and hire car facilities. The people are very laid back and friendly, with long deserted beaches and plenty of ocean front accommodation. It is a very popular weekend getaway destination for Cairns and Townsville residents.
Local residents boast that visitors can still find their own secluded coves with their own pristine beaches for the day. Rainforest walks in World Heritage Wet Tropics, White Water Rafting, Tandem Skydiving, horse riding, fishing, sailing and sea kayaking are some popular activities. Water based activities include visiting the Great Barrier Reef, Game Fishing, Sailing and Kayaking, scuba diving and snorkeling. Day cruises to Dunk Island depart from Clump Point Jetty.
If there is a chance of seeing a Cassowary, this area is the place that it will happen. Popular walking tracks include the Licuala track (2 hrs), Lacey Creek (30mins), Bicton Hill Lookout (1.5 hrs) and the 7km return Edmund Kennedy Walk.
